Award-winning graphic designer Jim Harrison and illustrator Thomas Burns have formed a unique collaborative partnership and are proud to introduce THE BUREAU OF NATIONAL WONDERS, a series of captivating and inspiring images.

Classmates at the University of Florida’s School of Graphic Design in the 1990’s, they decided to combine their design & illustration experience to create inspiring “faux vintage” works of graphic art reminiscent of the Works Progress Administration in the early 20th century.

The fictitious Bureau of National Wonders is an ever-expanding collection of images showcasing American cultural heritage, technological achievements and natural beauty. “Instilling graphic art with a sense of history is something that’s very important to us both,” according to Harrison, “and we make sure that each piece should not only look great, but be a conversation starter -- a way to spark a discussion of American achievement”.

The final works are a composite of hand-rendered and digitally finished techniques. The collaboration takes place remotely—Harrison lives in Gainesville, Florida while Burns has lived near Atlanta, Georgia since 1998. Harrison began the GAINESVILLE FRUIT CO. four years ago as a way to create and sell artwork featuring Gainesville’s landmarks in the style of vintage fruit crate labels, while Burns’ ATLANTA VINTAGE TRAVEL serves the same purpose in Atlanta within a travel poster motif.

Both have exhibited their works in museums, galleries and public spaces, while Harrison’s graphic design work has earned numerous local Silver, Gold and Best of Show Advertising Federation awards, as well as a national SAPPI Paper “Ideas That Matter” grant. After 15 years as a designer and art director he established MetaVisual in 2007, a design studio specializing in corporate identity, branding, visual systems and other design projects.
